Don't be too surprised by what you see outside of the UK ... I lived in Madrid in the early 90s; people consider it very cosmopolitan, attractive etc but there was a bona fide shanty town in the north, right in the middle of some residential flats ... dozens if not hundreds of people living under corrugated roofs in makeshift 'abodes' ... I was shocked, but that is how it is in some places not too far from home, not just in the former communist bloc.

I went to Sofia too on way back from Bansko last week but didn't think the flats looked that bad to be honest - sure they were ugly, but they didn't look nearly as dilapidated as similar properties in the UK and elsewhere. I was more distressed by the comment from a man next to us in the bus - "God, it's clear they're still living in flats"! Clearly he hasn't been to London recently, where living in anything bigger than a flat is a pipe dream for most people.

Central Sofia was ok, although I found it rather bland (maybe it was just the way the guide presented it). The juxtaposition of wedding dress shops and sex shops was interesting though! And I enjoyed the changing of the guard outside the President's residence - straight out of the Ministry of Silly Walks.
