spending money...

Passport has arrived, so on the net booking my holiday Very Happy
samokov 10th jan as it £100 cheaper than the end of jan, what's the best currency to bring? I have some euros, can they be used in boro? Also how cheap is the resort? £500 In Austria spends only just about did me the week, but I have heard it's cheaper in Bulgaria.
And what's the best way to keep the money? Does the samokov have room safe? Are visa debit cards widely accepeted?

Thanks in advance for the help, I'm sooo excited, ...

Sad Well 100 pounds cheaper for Jan 10, you pay your money and takes your choice. Currency wise clean 10 or 20 pound notes is the best form of choice. Spending money round figure of 400 pound would be adequate depending on how you hit the bars etc. ( I have heard that Manc Tom can make 100 pound last him the week Very Happy) Cannot recall if Samokov Hotel have safes ( Greenfrog frollics) should hit you back on this one. visa cards etc, err to caution but there are hole in the walls around. ...

Samokov has safe deposit boxes which are kept behind reception , as snow plough has said could be taking chance with the snow levels early jan for sake of £100 might be better off later in season

Later in Jan is probably better for snow.
I take a debit card and take the cash out when I'm there. The exchange rate is much better but could be offset against what your bank may charge. Alternatively just exchange some GBP for LEV prior to going. The local money is Lev and probably around 2.3lv to the £ although somebody there now can be more precise

Hi...

I usually take clean and fresh (ie not torn or tatty) £20 notes and either change them in Samokov town on the way through (this only works if you have a private transfer, not if you are on the package-bus), at the Crown Booths in Borovets village or at the hotel reception. I take £300-£400 and also a debit card. If I need levs I get some from the ATM at the airport (on the right as you pass through customs) or from the ATM outside the supermarket under the Royal Plaza which is ...

No room safes in the Samokov Hotel, but as Mad Mark says there are behind reception though I think they charge a fee, not sure. I keep my cash in the room, divided up and hidden in a couple of places, plus some obviously visible in a drawer and never noticed any go missing and I've stayed there 3/4 times now.

Re the snow, you just can't tell what it's going to be like. I've been in early January and had plenty, and have also been the end of January and had only man-made stuff (that was this year), but you are better off going later if you can. If there's poor snow, you'll spend that £100 you are saving now on keeping yourself amused if you can't ski much.

Hi all

Think I would have paid the extra £100 for end of Jan due to the quality of snow, but more than that, the quality of the company that week. Gush lol.

Personally I just lock my £20 notes and any spare lev I'm not taking out with me in my suitcase. Had very large amounts of cash like that and never had or heard of an issue of money going missing. I also make a note of how much is there and keep it separate so that if some does go missing that I am positive what there had been ...

At the end of the day make sure you have travel insurance, how much that covers and have a way to continue your holiday if it does get stolen or lost (Credit Card / Money in the bank and another Debit Card).

Hope you have a great time.

Hi ,

SnowPlough is right on the 10 or 20 pound note issue, the best exchanges are the crown booths dotted around the resort (the ones with a crown emblem on the top are the most reliable )

As for S.P.'s remark about me making 100 pounds last for a week, he is one to talk! he went to a Scottish wedding in full dress but had the sporran welded shut!! Rumour has it that he carries all his wealth in a ruck sack! so Eunice can,t get at it whilst he is away. She should sell the motor cycle ...

re:spending money...

Excellent news, great decission.

I have one of those money things too that I use on the slopes. It's like a slim bum bag which is great on the slopes as I can't stand having all my pockets stuffed full.

One word of advice though, now you are coming that week, watch out for a guy called Ponty Paul! He is a real nightmare, you won't see him on the slopes, but he is notorious around the resort but especially in Bobbys Bar.

See you there

So I will spend a beer, to welcome you on the board.
Spending money in Borovez is easy, I stay in the town of Samokov 9 km in front of Borovets and needs round about 60 lev a day so 420 lev a week and may be another 100 for shopping.

I think we will have a drink for your birthday on the sunday meet, let's have a look on Bobbys Bar Webcam on the 25.
