re: traditional bulgarian food

Maddog There are many places in Boro serving traditional food but the cheapest will be out of the resort. My favourite in Boro are Titanic (near Rila Hotel) - their special is very traditional and is served alight, Venice Bar- try the Turkish bread and there's one over on the far lower slope (near kindergarten area) with a large BBQ and seating area outside - sorry but can never remember name - that does traditional food in earthenware pots. All 3 places have large, roaring fires too ...

If you are feeling adventurous try getting the bus from near the gondola to Samokov (no more than 2 lev fare). There are places in and around the square worth visiting for good, VERY reasonably priced, traditional food.

You can get a taxi from near the gondola but negotiate first (no more than 15 lev down to town and 20 lev for the return journey) and ask to be taken to the Little House in Samokov, which is my favourite in BG. It's very oldie worldie and excellent food and prices. If there's more than 2 of you going, I do advise booking first.

Hope this helps and others will recommend their favourites Very Happy

Sorry to correct you Borogirl but I think you mean The Old House (not little) in Bulgarian, Starata Kushta

Also I don't pay anymore than 15 levs in or out of Borovets, it's the same each way if you get a taxi from Samokov. It's maybe more if you book your taxi from Borovets for your return journey but just ask in the restaurant for taxi.

Borogirl
a trip to Samokov sounds good , do the busses run in the evening ?
and return late ?

re: traditional bulgarian food

Maddog Not sure how late they run as we always get a taxi or lift back. If you are going to try the Old House, you will need a taxi as it's quite a walk from main road and bus stop. If trying the centre, the bus goes there so could save money by only using taxi home.

Samokov bus station timetables are available if you try Google, or you could try starting a new thread, I know Sune is there at the moment and I'm sure he would find out for you. Very Happy Very Happy

Another good place in Samokov is Kokoshkova Kushta - quite smart but excellent food and for less than you'd spend in Borovets for the same.

I second that Very Happy It's actually a small hotel off the main square, probably one of the more expensive places in Samokov but great food, prices and service. Decor is modern 60's / Habitat. Look for the stone animals in front garden, especially the chicken Very Happy Very Happy

I'll third that too, Kokushkova Kushta is my favourite along side the Old House. Both places serve great food. There is also Sonatas restaurant very friendly and typically bulgarian. (Borogirl have you tried the new Castle restaurant?) All are very reasonable.
Bonitas is also great but more like a bistro than Bulgarian, great for kids and very cheap. (near the market)
