waxing - explanation?

right I've read a few posts regarding some hire gear not being very good due to not being waxed (making the board of ski's stick to the snow?!)

How can you tell if your hired board or skis have been waxed BEFORE you go up the mountain (e.g in the hire shop)?

Scrape a finger nail along a short length and you should get a buil of wax. If you want to check edges scrape finger nail across edge lightly and should shave off bit of nail if edges good.

Two things here ..... there is very little snow in Boro to stick to your board let alone board on Sad

And I have seen the rental stuff here .... the boot are OK but the bindings and boards are shocking. The are set up all wrong and just battered and poor.

Good luck ..... might be better to buy a board and bindings off ebay ... use it here thn get rid if you dont want it when you get back .... as they priced here for what the supply is disgusting !!!

Another thing to look out for...if there cloudy white patches (normally in the centre) of the base of ski, then it is due another waxing.

Sometimes it is worth taking some instant wax to wipe on the bottom...let it dry and then buff out. This come in the form as a spray and a stick and so easy to apply.

I personally wax my own skis before going on holiday then use these sticks to keep them in best shape through the holiday. Very Happy

Ryki, it may well be worth your while taking a cross head screw driver with you to set the bindings up, make sure that the same amount of the boot is showing over the front and back edge of the board when viewed upside down, looking at the base, otherwise you may be tow or heal heavy, ask a friendly snowboarder to help in the resort or demand the hire shop sorts it out for you. You do see a lot of badly set up hire snowboards and a little adjustment make a huge difference. Confused

Ryki aka The Badger,
You don't have to settle for cr&p gear although there's plenty of that about in Borovets. If you're going to boro, Hunters Ski hire do have modern good condition kit. They're in the Hunters bar/chalet which is next the the chinese which is on the left hand side of the Samokov hotel.

Avalanche - Boro on 7th

Snik - ta for that info, will pack the cross head

DaringRed - I'm not sure how it go's with the hiring tbh. I'm going with Inghams and I've booked the pre pack equip already. Can you go to ANY hire shop like some other resorts or do you haver to stick to what they say?
