Have you considered using 2-way radios? (Walkie-Talkies) For about £30 you get a range of up to 5km, and no call charges! Plus you don't have the hassle of incoming calls from folks back home AND it's not the end of the world if you misplace a unit.

Hi penslyn,

Yes it will.
Concerning costs you both will have to pay:
Get in touch with your provider via internet and look fot roamong partners and cost within EU. They are limited from 1st Januara 2008 on and BG has been taking part in the regulation. But again, you BOTH will have to pay roaming fees. A minute is approx. 39 Eurocent.

As arron says.

You can get a BG sim card for around 15 lev including 5 lev credit. It's how I keep in touch with my kids when we are out there and all in different groups and places each day. 5 lev on each phone seems to last the kids most of the week, I might have to get a 5 lev top-up.

Any leftover credit lasts for a year - unfortunately we were there in early Jan 2008, and not going for another 2 weeks so our simcards have expired now, and we'd had them for several seasons! ...

Cheapest place we found to get them was a little wooden fronted place halfway down the main street on the left going down toward the gondola. It is a 24hour minimarket, but they had them in the back room.

Just get an old phone unlocked before you go, costs between £5 and £10.

Get a cheap 'open phone' (£20) or make sure yours can take any sim card. Buy the new M-Tel Prima sim card for 10 lev, gives you 100 free sms and 5 lev credit, put on another 5 lev of credit and you can then select 5 'magic' numbers giving you 200 mins free talk time.

re: will my phone work

Bought a Bulgarian sim card last week and I will not be going to use it again. No credit left on it but it can be topped up.
If it is any use I can pop it in the post free off charge to anyone that wants one. It cost me 20 Leva.
