Yes, the world cup slalom is on 22-23rd. But you should arrive just as it finishes so the pistes should be open.

re: Bansko Jan 2010

We were in Bansko this year 2 weeks before the downhill races. Basically it was a disaster.

The two main runs (2 & 9) were closed for the entire week, and then the upper slopes closed due to high winds for a few days.

On the lower slopes we basked in glorious sunshine, meaning by 2 O' Clock the lower slopes had turned to slush. This meant the ski run home was unskiable, because you had to walk the last mile home as you couldnt maintain enough speed to get yourself to the ...

The two main runs (2 & 9) were closed for the entire week, and then the upper slopes closed due to high winds for a few days.

On the lower slopes we basked in glorious sunshine, meaning by 2 O' Clock the lower slopes had turned to slush. This meant the ski run home was unskiable, because you had to walk the last mile home as you couldnt maintain enough speed to get yourself to the Kempinski/Happy End.

This inturn caused most skiers to assmble and ski on a fewer amount of slopes, increasing the risk of accidents, especially for beginners. I never saw the emergency Skidu's pulling so many accident victims as I saw this year.

Now these run closures wont affect you if you are only beginners as they are re/black, but if you are experienced and like to ski a lot, this could curtail your activities, especially if what happened to us occurs again.

If you are experienced you will want to Ski 'Tomba' (No.9), therefore you will be dissapointed.

We were due to go out there on Jan' 16th, but we have now changed to February.

According to Mat above, he reckons that the slopes will be open on the following day of the races????

Having seen the prepartion work for the slopes for the races last year, I'm not sure if I would want to ski on race prepared slopes. The foundation of the "Race Ski Run' is 1 metre thick ice. I watched them hosing the slopes all day ever day we were there trying to form this 1M thick ice cube to race upon.

I think this will have to be broken up before they let mere mortals ski down it? Perhaps someone else knows for sure??

re: Bansko Jan 2010

Actually this year there was a heavy dump of snow the night before the race, so the hard ice was covered in a good layer of snow and all their hard work was for naught. But of a shame for the skiers. The only thing they did do was to remove the jump/cliff that was built into the course just above the finish. Other than that, after a day or two the surface will have softened and can be groomed as normal.

re: Bansko Jan 2010

Mat you are confusing me now.

Do you know for sure when Tomba opened this year after the races?

I'm guessing it took a bit of work to remove the jump near the finish line, as it took over 3 days to build it.

Also all the fencing/netting along the racing route would have to be removed. This took over a week to erect, so I am guessing it would take over a week to diasssemble?

There must have been 100 tonnes of Kit in the car park two weeks before the races waiting to be assembled ...

There must have been 100 tonnes of Kit in the car park two weeks before the races waiting to be assembled.

The grandstands, television towers, television screens, marquees, etc all have to be removed.

All this movement of 'Kit' requires the use of large machinery.....I dont think Ullen would allow people ski around/through this heavy machinery.

Getting back to the metre deep ice block......I'm guessing it took longer than a day or two for this to soften, as it took them over a month to build.

It would be a guesstimate of mine that it was two weeks minimum after the races that Tomba opened, and when I have time I will search through the discussion board archives to see if I can get a definate date.

re: Bansko Jan 2010

Now you put me on the spot - I can't exactly remember how long it took them to clean it up but it wasn't long. They had hundreds of people (they claim 450 but I'm not sure I believe that) working on it. I'd guesstimate at no more than a week.
