re: Bansko

Im with pete on this one. Hated the place and wont be back.

Long Queues.
Dirty dirty town.
Expensive by bulgarian standards.
Apres ski lasted for about 1 hour then pubs deserted.
Rip off town.
No atmosphere.

On a positive. The slopes are the best in bulgaria.

Thankfully my opinion is an honest one not influenced by investments and the need to constantly defend the place Wink

re: Bansko

Dw completely disagree. Long queues? Did not see any but I was not there in peak season and know that in peak weeks this is a problem.

Dirty, dirty town? Now come on utter tosh. I walked around pretty much all of it and was impressed by how clean it was. Certainly beats my Local towns of Dunstable and Luton.

Expensive? Where did you go? All the places I ate in were very cheap certainly much cheaper than Pamps. My partner and I ate in what can only be described as a Bulgarian greasy spoon. All menus in Bulgarian and full of locals, we had beer each a main course each and a plate of ribs on the side and 2 cokes for less than £5!!

Apres ski is what you make it again with my friends the SKIDVD crew we found a little cafe that had great service and cheap good HOT food. Again the prices well let me just say it was hard to spend money.

I had been to Pamporovo 5 times before venturing to Bansko and I love Pamparovo and always will but I think Bansko beats it hands down in all department's.

Long queues and then about half an hour to 45 minutes to get to top....Fact

Dirty town. We were destroyed everytime. It was a quadmire. And as to state of the footpaths, thats another matter....

Expensive.. Absolutely. Prices were aprox 3 times pamps the previous year. Now i understand you were with the DVD crew, so thats a different matter, some of them live close by and know the best and cheapest places to go to. you were fortunate.

Apres ski in general was very limited. Im talking about the premises close to the gondola.

I dont like the place. I was with a group of 23 and not one person said they would return.

re: Bansko

I've only been to Bansko so can't comment to much on Pamps or Borovets. But correct me if I'm wrong, but I was led to believe that Pamps and Borovets were smaller versions of the purpose builts resorts you get in France etc, which in my opinion are concrete jungles and prime for ripping off a captive audience.
Bansko on the other hand will probably not win any Bulgaria in Bloom competition, but in its own way its quaint and was quite nice. Last year it had loads of eating places, meaning ...

As for queues you get them in many resorts, I've queued in Mayerhofen, Zugspitze, Hintertux and many more. Unless you can ski out your front door there is always going to be a bottle neck somewhere.
The Bansko, Borovets, Pamps argument is one where there will never be a winner, its all down to personal preference.

Pamps and Borovets are minging.

re: Bansko

When I ate out most nights I was with my partner before meeting up with the rest of the guys. Every Mehana I found was cheaper than Pamps by a long way.

re: Bansko

Dokeywalloper you must have been using the slow gondola, as the fast one only takes 20 mins to get up to the middle station....Fact.

re: Bansko

This is a really interesting read. Went to Pamps last year, going to Bansko this year, but simply because of the hotel we wanted to stay in. Loved Pamps, loved the hotel, and the bars. Would have a laugh snowboarding on a slight gradient 10 meters long because I am rubbish, but my view is I can't get any worse unless I forget how to stand up. Looking forward to Bansko, just to compare, who knows, may try Borovets next year.
