re: Borovets Lift / Conditions Update - December 23rd

Ahh I see, well I'm praying for snow!

I was speaking to Ian W earlier seeing if it would be possible for me to ski in a hoodie here as I hate wearing my ski coat....but I'd rather wear it and actually be able to ski!

I believe rakia is the local brewed spirit? They have something very similar in Greece (Naxos to be precise) called Raki....which is just mind blowing! A clear spirit that is pretty much odour less but very firery/hot to drink? Sound about on the right lines?

Yep - luckily most of the rakia that they serve in the bars are around 46% - the one that Booby's mum and all the the local grandma's make is closer to 80%....we will bring some up from home for you to try although you may not thank us for it!!!

That sounds very similar too!

We went up to the mountains on this greek island we went to, and it was so much stronger than the bottle that I baught and brought home....still, I'd not say no to some of the original stuff Smile

Well let's hope that all of us praying together will bring the snow!! Iv been looking on the snow-forecast site and it says there will be some starting on the 26th of dec, but as you said, these forecats aren't always reliable!

The shots will be lovely, thanks Smile .....but aren't they onabout having ski police this year?

re: Borovets Lift / Conditions Update - December 23rd

The ski patrols are out and about this year but a lot of it in Borovets is due to the fact that Borosport have banned any teaching by anyone not affiliated to a ski school - I think this is the same as in Bansko, but Steve C is the best one to answer that.

The ski patrol are checking instructors documents to make sure they have the correct licences etc to teach, if not they will be fined. Also, the lifts up top close at 4.00, so they finish up there then and we will be the only ones up ...

Saying that, Bobby is not letting anyone ski down late (6ish) unless they are at least intermediate and sober'ish and we will refuse to serve drinks if anyone looks like they will be too drunk to ski down safely.

I see,

From a previous topic I was lead to believe that they may also be fining intoxicated skiers too.

Not sure I'm classed as an intermediate yet Wink I can manage blues and reds (normally, its been a while so maybe I won't be doing this on the first day!aha) pretty easily.

Its true what they say about alcohol increasing confidence because the first time I went skiing I darent go down a proper run until I'd had a couple of pints! Don't need that anymore to get me going down now ...

The other thing that I'd also read was that the ski patrol were also stopping skiers who seem to be skiing dangerously, do you know if they class 'dangerous' as not giving other skiers room for manoeuvres etc or is it speed related?

re: Borovets Lift / Conditions Update - December 23rd

We haven't seen them stop anyone yet, it has been more checking instructors licences than the holiday-makers. We have also been advised that 'dangerous skiers' is more about those that are totally out of control due to speed - which I hate to say tends to be at the weekend and is more locals than holiday-makers.

Saying that, the season has hardly started, so we will keep you posted if we hear of anyone being stopped.

Brill,

Excuse me for asking, but when does the Borovets ski season take off full-swing?

The reason I ask about the patrols is I'm a speed freak, I love the exhilaration of going fast! But I'll take it steady for a few hours until I get into the swing of things again! Wink

re: Borovets Lift / Conditions Update - December 23rd

It officially started on the 18th, but the resort is very quiet - one of the reasons is that Xmas day falls on a Saturday (usual transfer day) so it has really affected numbers etc - next week (starting Sunday) is supposed to be very busy but that also probably depends on the snow...!
