Bulgaria vs France

Hi all,
I have just returned from Tignes had fantastic time the snow was really good and well mentained, the lift system was superb the longest i waited was about 3 mins!!
I read on this site before i went that the prices for food and drink on the mountain are very similar to those in Bulgaria, i can confirm that that is complete rubbish the prices are double for example 2 pizzas £18, 3 hot dogs 2 beers and 1 coke £30 and the sevice wasn't great far from it, so we used the super market ...

I have been to Pamps this season in january so my thoughts are if you want a good all round holiday for example reasonable snow, reasonably priced food, drink and good fun then Bulgaria is a good option,
If you want to lap up miles of pistes with great facilities then Bulgaria is not for you.
I will be returning to the both resorts next year Pamps for another great time and to meet up with some friends we made there, and Tignes for some serious boarding.
Hope some of you find this usefull
Chris

Sums it up Chris. I went to Chamonix 3 years ago, fantastic snowboarding, loads of off piste in mid March; views of Mont Blanch to die for - but.. £25 for Fondeu (bread and hot Cheese), burger and Chips £7.

Service was dire as well.

Know someone who went to Val desaire this year and a weeks spending money was £1k..... food & drink only that was eating out 3 times a day and not drinking as much as you would have thought.

Id suggest that if anyone is finding Bulgaria expensive really you shouldnt be going on holidays especially with the credit crunch. it is cheap but if your finding it pricy then maybe one skiing holiday every other year is in order or one year just stay at home to save up/take a second job on your ...

Sorry for being patronising but fact is it is cheap - ive been there a number of times over the years (3 total) and prices have not jumped they have stayed the same or thereabouts.

It is cheap compared to other European resorts and if you hunt around you can find good food, drinks and service at a very, very good price, just before you go ask on here where the reasonable and expensive joints are Cool

It's all about how you manage your holiday. My better half and I regularly go to France and Bulgaria and in France I get to carry the rucksack and she fills it with rolls and pain au chocolates from the local supermarket (which is cheaper then home) and lunch only costs us a quid or two each max. In Bulgaria we always eat on the mountain with prices being reasonable. Lift system and snowmaking far better in France but then night life not quite as good... C'est La Vie. Can't have it all!

re: Bulgaria vs France

Don't think people have been saying how expensive bulgaria is, just how the prices have been hiked up over the last two years. Must admit have laughed when people say france is as cheap as bulgaria, no way, My friend got back from flaine on sunday, ate out every night two adults, one child and never saw any change out of £60. Personally though I would rather have a great ski area and take a packed lunch and cook at night, but I go to ski, Bulagria is a grrat place if you are a novice skier ...

All I was saying was that I thought I was going on holiday to BG where I'd previously found it cheep & cheerful and this year realised its overpriced and surly.

Welshy your comments were a little patronising but thankfully I can afford to go where I please on holiday - and Bulgaria didn't please me this year and I won't be wasting any resort workers time in the near future by having the cheek to turn up and expect a holiday.

re: Bulgaria vs France

Chris,
Spend 3 weeks a year and Chamonix and thoroughly recommend it skiing excellent, good snowmaking, good variety, and eveing prices not 'toooo' dear if you pick carefully (but can be heinous). WIth balanced view though you really need a car to get around as the skiing is spread down such a long valley and there's nothing worse than busing it with a board after a hard days boarding. Vallee Blanche though is awesome with the best views on the way down a mountain I have ever seen.
