He did not say don't go to ski in Bulgaria in January he said dont go to Bulgaria!!!! thats the title of your conversation and you dont think that will raise a few personal opinions!!! LOL
Ski in January in France is also a risk and in allot of other resorts but it will not cost an arm and a leg in Bulgaria and the Bulgarians are great hosts...
People are entitled to their opinion, and i suppose again entitled to try to pass that on.. but to bring up examples of snow sure areas in the Alps is misleading, nowhere is snowsure. Im with Nick, an earlier poster, i spent 12 seasons in the `Haute Savoir' with a number of altitude premier resorts, 4 seasons it rained at Christmas, in fact speaking to an old mate who is still there in Val`d'isere, it was raining last Christmas day...
I will be honest, the purpose built resorts with skiing ...

I will be honest, the purpose built resorts with skiing from your door appeal to Brit skiers, the motorway wide piste and perfect grooming enabling them to think they are skiing well, Bulgaria however is reminisent of old Austria, tree lined, interesting and challenging runs.. with prices that allow you to talk about your skiing day over a pint or two...
I have just come back from Andorra and the snow was CRAP plus I didnt like the people or the resort. We only went there because we thought there was a better chance of snow over Christmas/New Year. New Years Eve in Andorra was rubbish there was no atmosphere unlike Pamporovo where we had the locals in the streets lighting fireworks and generally ...

We are now looking forward to returning to Pamps in February and looking forward to it.
Based on the OP's excellent advice I've contacted Balkan and cancelled our holiday to Bulgaria. We're returning all the ski gear to the shops and asking for refunds and we're settling for a week at home from the 15th January. Yes we've lost £2000 but at least we know we don't have to waste our first time skiing experience on a downmarket country like Bulgaria.
I'd like to thank the OP for his invaluable advice.
