re: French Alps ski costs

The stories are unfortunate as for many many people the experience is nothing but good. The accommodation can be better than France or Italy and certainly much better value for money.

We chose Boro last year as it was either that or postpone skiing for the 10th year. How glad I was that we did go however. I've skied many times in the Alps and love it but there is a unique charm to Borovets that I've never found in the Alps.

I'd love to France, Italy or Canada for 2 weeks and if business is good this year then perhaps we will. I would always want to come back to Borovets though for it's tree lined routes, great value and salt of the earth people.

Really looking forward to being there in March and wish I could be there sooner!

Tell you what Jake, look at top resorts that can be accessed fairly easily from other villages/towns...
Chamonix is superb, but stay up in Argentiere, St Anton in Austria, but stay in St Christoph, Kitzbuhul but stay in Kirchburg.. and possibly my favourite, Les Arc but stay in the beautiful village of Villaroger, near to Bourg St Maurice...
Of these none are particularly cheap, but a lot cheaper than the main resorts...

Austria will never disappoint, even the smaller villages generally have arrangements with resorts near by to ski, the Grossraum SkiWelt in the Tirol boasts one of the largest connected areas in the Alps, which now includes Kirchburg, Kitzbuhal.. but if you stayed in Ellmau or Itter, the accommodation costs would be lower and the eating and drinking...
Take a look also at the less promoted areas, i had a fantastic week in St Johann im Pongau in Austria, great prices and not big crowds... Personally you can keep the likes of Meribel, Courchevel, Zermatt, Gstadd, etc etc etc.. not condemning the areas but the glitzy resorts where people go to be seen never really interested me, 4 seasons spent in Val'd'Isere in its heyday put me off, overrun with `horray henries' and `henriettas' wearing the latest designer ski-suits and handmade `Pre' skis.. toddling down to the lift, only to sit in a restaurant all day. Everyone to their own, but if you want to ski, and then relax in the company of like minded people who don't care what you wear, take my advice and do your homework, you can ski the best areas in Europe on a budget, not maybe a BG budget, but still cheaper than main resorts...

Also doing Tignes this year 28th Jan cost is £2k inc lessons also HB, but only doing as never been to france, only ever skied Bulgaria and Canada (big differences) if you don't go and try yourself you can't contribute with opinions to discussions. I think and believe it would/will be hard to find anywhere like Bulgaria but I do want to try other places but could have done 2 trips to Boro or Pamps not including spending money for what it is costing, but look at it this way I could just be ...

re: French Alps ski costs

Thanks steve mate I was looking at St Anton before I found the deal to tignes. Didn't know people was so snobby about skiing I defiantly don't have the most designer gear and am only going there for the skiing and a change of scenery from borovets.

Is that price per person Janet or for a group of you? I personally can't wait and if I enjoy it enough and can find the money a sneaky trip to borovets is on the cards Smile

re: French Alps ski costs

Jake,
I've been going to Tignes Val Claret on a sc basis for last 10/12 years. The skiing is bloody marvellous mate. Had my 3rd ski lesson last year with TDC in Tignes. Really made a big difference to my skiing. If you can afford to take a half day private or small group lesson it would be well worth it. Got two boys trips to Bansko then back to Tignes with the kids in April.

PS the Espace Killy pass is £230 ish so you have a cracking deal. Enjoy and let us know how you get on.

re: French Alps ski costs

Have to agree that for the area £500 for flights, SC, pass etc is a good deal. If I didn't have to factor in food for 5 and lessons for the kids then it would be tempting but all those extras just make it too much... :-/
