In Boro now - Heatwave

Hi Guys,

We came last year Jan 20th and thought we would come last week of Feb as heard good reports about the snow in the past.

Althought good conditions at the top of the mountain it's a heatwave at the bottom.

Yesterday the high at Rila was 17 degrees celcius and today the high is 20 degrees. Even at the top it must be 6-8 plus degrees.

I had to go out and buy a thin bandana last night to protect my head today from the sun as I skied the whole day yesterday with no gloves, no ...

I had to go out and buy a thin bandana last night to protect my head today from the sun as I skied the whole day yesterday with no gloves, no hat or jacket and my head got so sunburnt.

There are a few burnt faces and heads around today. We will be staying at the top of the mountain for the next few days doing the red runs and drag lifts as the Rila side of the mountain is quite wet, muddy and slushy.

The depth of the snow of the runs is really good just a shame it has gone so warm. We did the Musala for the last few days that we didn't get to do last year. It's a really good run down the mountain but we won't be able to do it tomorrow as some of the run will have gone to full mud and rocks.

Any questions let me know and we hope and pray for low temps and snow hehe

re: In Boro now - Heatwave

Just checked out of Hotel Flora - still very warm down here in the resort. Up top is good but very very icy and hard to ski.

Thanks for the update Rob.
Sounds very odd conditions though - why would it be icy if it's +6 - +8 degrees?

re: In Boro now - Heatwave

the snow thaws in the day time then freezes at night then you get icy conditions to ski on, simple realy

re: In Boro now - Heatwave

There would need to be a massive fall in temps overnight to turn snow into ice, at least -10 Confused And anything between -3 and -10 would allow the cannons to be effective but they are not currently being used --- so not so simple actually davedon!

re: In Boro now - Heatwave

Last time I checked water froze at anything below 0c.

Anyway Pete, frequently the top layer of snow melts during the day and the snowpacks low temperature refreezes it when temps drop. Doesnt even have to be below freezing Wink

re: In Boro now - Heatwave

Sounds like similar conditions to last year - it was very warm then too. The snow went slushy in the afternoon, but by morning it was sheet ice down at the bottom

re: In Boro now - Heatwave

ignore the temperature screen on the Rila when its sunny...the sun heats up the gauge and gives false readings...when i was in Boro on the 23rd Jan it was sunny..the screen was showing 16c...but in the shade it was 2c on a thermometer !!!
