I had ACL surgery, im completely fine now (touch wood) still abit achy but no need for extra protection. As for insurance check on the document what you have to mention to them before you declare it, They charged me £80 for mine for a week and in the T&C's it said ACL surgery is ok and doesnt need to be declared!
The first time i went after my op i did take a knee brace but the best thing to do it just go faster... if you fall your skis will come off, when your going slow thats when ...

Not skied after ops but I do have a dodgy knee and ALWAYS ski with braces. I find the velcro/neoprene ones work well but then again I've not had ops. You can go with ones that have much more mechanical support. Take a look online at somewhere like http://www.physioroom.com/catalog/Skiing_Knee_Braces/3110.html and look at options that might be applicable for the type of injury you had.

I would also look at your fitness levels before you go. Plenty of exercise and weight loss will make a difference as (a) your leg muscles will be better developed and (b) your knees will be taking less strain.
The most recent one is very recent (!) and I'm fearful a fall on it will (a) hurt and b) do some more damage so will brace up as much as possible. I looked on physioroom last night so will return there again.
did lots of fitness to get the other knee in shape before xmas so not too bad cardio / leg muscle wise and now crash dieting!!
I severed my left ACL in 2011. Opted not to go the surgery route and settled with 10 months of physio.
I went to Borovets last year with a pretty serious knee brace which only just fit when wearing boots. The brace locked out to prevent hyper-extension and also locked to prevent maximum bend - allowing my knee to only move between certain predefined angles.
It was big and bulky, but essential to prevent another injury.
Here's an image of my old brace - I severed my left ACL in 2011. Opted not to go the surgery route and settled with 10 months of physio.
Have used a Muellor advanced Knee brace for the last five years as I have arthritus in my knee due to previous cartiledge problems as well as arthritis in my hip. Never had any problems. Also because it is a wrap around you can easily remove it at the end of the day without removing boots etc if you have gone into the bar for some apres ski

re: More Knee Help please
Following D, Buts advise I to have bought wrap around brace, weak knee from football injury.
Skied with one last year and made all the difference to confidence !!!!
Alan who frequents this site had a mega contraption last year. Amazing piece of engineering that locked his knee in place. No problem with "bend zee knees"!
