re: Pamps snow report

Hi Everyone,

i have been reading the threads from the start.

My wife and i are thinking of coming to Pamps early Feb09.

We learnt to Ski Feb08 with a 1-to-1 instructor (Rosen was his name - real friendly guy). We had a great time and the snow was plentiful (we stayed in the Castle as well)

Amanda/Missizippi, you seem to be the people in the know...

Hope to hear from you soon

re: Pamps snow report

I can't believe for one minute that the lack of snow in Pamps is down to global warming. If it is and the reduciton in snow continues on a linear scale, in 10 years time the resort will have no snow until mid Jan and finsh end of Feb.
Surely it's just a bit of bad luck?

re: Pamps snow report

Hi,

Just got back from Pamps and there has been a constant light fall of snow on Friday and Saturday. The beginning of the week was very poor but the past few days have been much better. Most of the runs are closed and the few that were opened have been jammed with beginners over the past week. There are some runs that don't look prepared for this season at all, with large creators and small trees.

I hired a car from Penguin for €15/day and it was well worth it. Smoljan has much cheaper restaurants and the taxis in Pamps (supposedly run by the mafia) are way over priced.

Amanda/anyone - can you tell me what Stoikite is like and would it suit an intermediate boarder? I've a place in Pamps, and I'm wondering if it's worth going back to try Stoikite and Pamps again this year, once there's more snow. Is it far from Pamps?

re: Pamps snow report

Stoikite is a nice village and about 6-7 km from Pamps. We saw two small deer at the foot of the mountain there.

When I was there last week the snow was all the way down to Stoikite. The runs will be great when the snow dumps

re: Pamps snow report

The snow last night was lighter in Pamps than elsewhere. The bottom of the two new red runs to Stoikite has good cover, although the top is not so good. The lads from the snow shack were just leaving to go and do a recce when I left them this afternoon. They were going to take the 6 man chair down and up again to look at the runs.

The main pamps red and blacks have not been prepared at all - there seems to be some politics here - something about the forestry should have cut down the saplings and the piste bashers are not allowed to go on the runs until they have been cut - so seems to be a stale mate situation. However until there is at least 50cm of snow they wouldn't compress the base anyhow. Some people are skiing the reds today, however this is actually doing more harm than good as the base has not yet been compacted. - Totally understand them doing them though - if you are only here for a week and you feel confident off piste then they are do-able.
