I took my military type suitcase, set up the generator, erected a 40 foot mast with a directional beam. Plugged in the amplifier and started to transmit 1 kilowatt of power towards the mountain...Unfortunately I didnt manage to contact my partner, but I did melt all the snow !!!!

We used Binatone walkie-talkies with 7KM range. I got them off Ebay for 20 quid . They were so good that we bought another set so we could all have 1 each and we found them invaluable.
The range was incredible and they were my only link with the outside world when I was in Razlog hospital as my mobile was flat.
I can remember the day that Bansko had a huge dump ,think it was 22 march, and my daughter was trying to contact my hubby and she was saying it was a complete whiteout, and she was ...

She couldn't believe it when I started freaking out over the walkie-talkie.
I even managed to talk to family when they were at the Hotel Narcis and in the Friendly Bar whilst I was in hospital. They were incredible value for the money

Going to Boro 28th Dec - first time & I had the idea of taking WT's. Got a binatone terraine 550 quad pack for 30 quid so we can all have one but no idea how effective they will be. Max range is 5 miles but I understand that may be shorter with trees & mountains in the way. Hope they work tho.

re: Walkie Talkie Experiences...Anyone?

Funnily enough, I have done more searching and picked up a set of Binatone 550 as well. They seem to have a great write up on Amazon so went for it.

The range on most of these licence free walkie talkies seem very limited as the 8 km (5 mile) range of these Binatone are great without interuption, but seem to have good clairty and one of the better ranges...should be perfect for skiing in Bulgaria.

Gonna be walking this weekend, so gonna test out the range!
