Walkie Talkie Experiences...Anyone?

When my wife and I go skiiing...sometimes I pop off for harder slopes whilst my wife relaxes with a cup of hot chocolate. Does anyone have any experiences or recommendations for a set of walkie talkies for us to keep in contact?

Lookin on Ebay there are some beinf sold with a range of 30 miles...yet after researching in reality is only 2 to 3 miles maximum.

Any feedback would be great so I don't waste my money...cheers Smile

re: Walkie Talkie Experiences...Anyone?

We take decent walkie talkie's, but as you say the range doesn't really work. We have found it easier to buy local sim cards for the phones and doing it that way. It does mean that you both need un-locked mobile phones. Cost wise; the sims work out about £7 and include £5 credit, plus it is cheaper to text home etc. Unlocking your mobile costs bbetween £10-£20 at a local UK market depending on the model. Very Happy

I use a pair of Motorola walkie-talkies but, as you say, the coverage range is about 5km, but remember that the signall will not go through or over mountains!

You can get more powerfull two-way radios but the radio frequencies that they use are licensed and if you try and use them without a valid licence you can get in some pretty heavy doo-doo!

The best solution is as already mentioned above and to get a local sim card to use in your mobile. It will cost a few quid but at least you ...

Deffo worth the money, but invest in a set with a decent range because as Bibbly said, they will need to be strong enough to get over the mountain. We use the 8km range Cobra sets and they work all over Pamporovo without any problem.

re: Walkie Talkie Experiences...Anyone?

We have a set of BT freeway walkie talkies and have the ear pieces with the PTT buttons on - this means you don't need to take off your gloves and mess about with the walkie talkie if you need to talk.
There were 4 of us with them in Pamps last year and we found that we could talk from pretty much anywhere from the top of the Snezhanka peak down to the bottom ski centre. I don't imagine they'd work all the way down the runs to Stoikite though and back down the other side.

The sim cards sound interesting - where do you buy them from?

re: Walkie Talkie Experiences...Anyone?

Hi ya,

My ex is military in the signals / comms' unit etc and he used military-recommended walkie talkie's for him and his son, when they ski'd. They weren't the most expensive - more lower-middle end of the range - just the most practical, durable etc - Still in touch, so will mail him and get back to you with his ideas.

We Use both local sim card in mobiles and radios/walkie talkies.

What you are looking for are PMR 446. This is a license free system that is power limited and the range is 'up to' 5 km. You can find some pretty cheap ones with a few channels but with no security. Motorolla do a decent set with a few security options on each channel giving you hundreds of semi private channels.

Real time range as pp said would work for all of pamps slopes, and in my experience, nearly all of borovets, not from one mountain to the other side of the other obviously (that is where the local sim cards come in) but if one has a coffee and one goes for a more challenging run the odds are you will still be on the same mountain! Razz Also highly recommended for groups in different rooms in the same resort/hotel

Pair of decent motorollas cost us about £80 with rechargeable batteries and desktop charger, but that was when the design was new - a few years ago but they should be a lot cheaper now Razz

Hope this helps Razz Booze
