does anyone know what aircraft balkan holidays use to service there route from birmingham to plovdiv??? i don't really fancy another flight on a plane held together with masckin tape (if that is how it is spelt) hence their tupolevs
Its part of the Bulgarian adventure - I love going on these planes, they've got character. And the hostesses have proper uniforms not polo shirts! They did use some Airbuses for a while, but I think that was only on very 'noise sensitive' routes. The Balkan air Holidays website certainly only mentions the Tupolev Tu 154s
would also just add that the RAF flies our brave servicemen and women abroad on aircraft built in the 1960's and 1970s. Balkan Holiday Air Tupolevs are, I believe of mid 1980s vintage!
AHHH Balkan Air brings back memories free champagne but you can't by beer. Sit where you like once you have run to the aircraft at the end of the runway. Memories just makes want to scream I can't wait
Last years flight from Birmingham was a Tupolev 154 which Balkan operated via Cardiff. There were a number of very lively approaches into Cardiff on windy Saturdays! On one flight as a result of a strong cross wind there was a very firm landing that caused the oxygen masks to drop down out of their compartments, and seat backs fell into the forward position as a result of the rapid breaking....The planes are solid as a rock on the outside but the internal fixture as you will be aware leave a ...

yh..in one way i prefer them because they have no autopilot so you arn't relying on a computer to get you there as much...but the could do with being renovated lol
I like the xtra part to the safety briefing where the stewardesses advise you in broken English - 'During takeoff, lockers may open, tables may fall down from seaatback - don't worry - its normal'
To be honest Pampsmad, I think they have been renoveated - using B&Q white gloss - the panels around the windows have been painted cos you can see the brushmarks!

Firm landings are pretty regular - as we slammed into the ground at Gatwick last year, the stewardess came on and said 'Hmmm - I THINK we've just landed'! These aircraft are designed to land on all sorts of rough air strips across the former USSR and so I'm sure a proper piece of tarmac isn't a problem for it lol
