People who cannot fit into a standard seat will be asked to pay for two seats, or not be allowed on board for "safety reasons", according to the airline.

Air France spokeswoman Monique Matze said: "We have to make sure that the backrest can move freely up and down and that all passengers are securely fastened with a safety belt.

"The charge will only apply on flights that are fully booked. They will get their money back on flights where spaces are available."

The airline intends to charge passengers 75% of the cost of the second seat on top of the full price for the first.

Air France was ordered to pay £5,000 damages in 2007 for "humiliation" to a 27-stone passenger at an airport check-in desk in New Delhi.

Frenchman Jean-Jacques Jauffret, 43, had his stomach measured by Air France staff before being told he needed to buy two seats.

Mr Jauffret claimed he was told: "People as fat as you need to buy two seats."

United Airlines introduced the same policy last year, making passengers with extra-wide bodies pay for an extra seat.

Air France's new charges will apply for people who book their tickets from February 1 for all flights from April 1.

Does that mean if you are skinny you would get 75% off, i think not

Recall some years ago flying home with Balkan airlines this humugus elderly Ruski sat by me his belt could not fit around him and the best part he pulled a pocket knife out of his pocket and peeled an apple. Neutral

why does a skinny or average size person only get 20kg luggage same as a big person it should be measured on overall weight that seems fair and im glad they should have to pay for 2 seats but the person next to them should get a 75% discount for sharing their seat.

Why don't the airlines set a limit of 120kg per passenger, that includes luggage? whether it's a 60kg of body mass and 60kg of duty free or 120kg of blubber it still uses the same amount of fuel?

100% agree with Dan that an overall weight of body and baggage is the fairest way to charge for flights. Why should someone who weighs 7 st and who’s baggage is 2 kilos over be charged excess baggage. In the next check in desk will be someone weighing 20 stone plus who is bang on the baggage weight limit and pays nothing extra. Surely it must cost a lot more to get them and their bags to the destination. This is not a dig at large people as I weigh 14st myself but If I was builder I would ...

I think it's fair enough. Maybe it'll be an incentive for these people to leave some cake for the rest of us. In a world where people are starving i've got little sympathy for those who eat lots exercise little and still expect equal rights.

re: this really does take the

why do they have to pay for two seats?? its not like they will be using both, they cant sit in the middle of them cos of the arm rest, belt etc... or will they install fat person seats?? id happily pay extra not to have a fat person spilling onto my seat, rubbing their arms and legs against mine, taking my arm rest, sweating on me, stinking me out with the smell of cheese and onion crisps, egg butties, cream soda, breathing on me.....or am i missing the point??
