re: Bansko ski road record

Ok .. I will tell you something which was quite funny ...

It was our first year in Bansko and after a couple of days of skiing (Almost total novices) at the end of the day we decided to have a go at the ski road ...

We finished our lesson at about 3.30 pm and then set off down the ski road back to Bansko ...

Everything started off fine but then when we hit the slope just before the bridge (anyone who has been before will know what I am on about) the nightmare began ... ( a bit ...

We finished our lesson at about 3.30 pm and then set off down the ski road back to Bansko ...

Everything started off fine but then when we hit the slope just before the bridge (anyone who has been before will know what I am on about) the nightmare began ... ( a bit over exagerated :-) )

Anyway .... the kids and I had skied almost to the bridge when I heard a cry of help from behind me .. I could see that my partner was struggling to get down the slope ... we struggled back up to help her and by this time I could see that it was starting to get dark and not many other people were passing us by ....

Without alarming the children and my partner I was beginning to think .. my god are we going to get off this slope before we lose the light!!

Anyway as it happens we did get ourselves sorted and got back down to the gondala station at 5.30 ... which in total took us TWO HOURS to ski!!! ..... Surely that has to be a record!!

I tell you .... that first pint in the Happy Bar after that ordeal didn't touch the sides .. but we did laugh about it and it sticks in our minds as a fond memory!!

Please don't let me put off people about the ski road .. we love it .. and it's a great way to end your day off ..

For the record .. since 'our ordeal' the best we have skied it is about 20 mins from top to bottom .. which I know is still pretty useless but none the less good for us ...

Next day we asked out ski instructor what is the fastest he has skied it and he replied .... 5 mins!! Amazing!!

Anyway .. enough of my banter I look forward to seeing the results ..

Oh AlpineKid - you have just made my night - as I can echo what you said - but couldn't decide whether to post it up or not!!

2 year ago at the end of the day I decided to take my (still very hyperactive) 6 yr old - at his insistence.

We started off well but as it inclined a bit more he took off, picking up speed then crashed. He was shaken but eventually we got going again - this time he nearly veered off into the river! I was tired and my nerves not coping well! From there we ...

From there we went on - stop, start, fall, tears, long breather, then set off again....2.5hrs later!!!

As you said - by this time the light was drawing in, I had not seen a soul and to be honest was absolutely panic struck with visions of my son and I being there all night, in the dark, being eaten by wolves......

Just as I was nearing heart failure a sole ski instructor came down - he saw my distress and bless him, patted me on the back/said not to worry/put my son in between his legs and WHOOSH!!! they were off - it was as much as I could do to keep up - with tears still flowing!

We got to the bottom and my son said "wow - that was GREAT Mum" - I wanted to kill him!!!

Kissed the instructor, thrust loads of Lev into his hands and then dashed into the nearest bar.

When I look back now - oh gawd how I laugh Razz Razz but at the time it was really quite frightening!!

We have been back 2x since and my son skies it quicker than I do now (is that even worse I wonder!)

This is what skiing is all about eh! Mad memories!!

re: Bansko ski road record

well its good to hear the funny stories about the ski road home and glad you all made it back for a drink and a laugh but i must warn any novice skiers/boarders to take great care as some parts of the ski road home is narrow and the river that flows along side it has some very large rocks in it, if you would like to join in on the record time, i will put it into categories but these are the rules all persons taking part must wear a helmet and must take extreme care if you don't feel safe ...

I totally second that James.

Yup - that river is not the most inviting place to fall into!!

Take care all.

I will be down the road at some point but not competing Razz
