Bulgaria's ruling party has proposed the watering down of a new smoking ban in the country which has the second highest percentage of smokers in the European Union.
The centre-right GERB party, which won the General Elections last July, said it will propose the relaxing of the ban on smoking in all public places and avoid damaging the tourist industry during tough economic times.
The proposed changes have the support of the Socialists Party but some of GERB's allies in parliament said they would vote against it.
According to a draft submitted to parliament, restaurant and cafe owners with premises smaller than 100 square metres (1,000 sq ft) in size will decide themselves whether to allow smoking or not, whilst larger establishments would be required to designate separate non-smoking areas.
Similar measures were imposed as part of a partial smoking ban in 2005 but have been widely ignored. Smoking will remain forbidden in all public buildings and on public transport. It is expected that the proposed total ban will now be phased in over the next 5 years, but this is still likely to be largely uninforced.
Bulgaria, with a population of 7.6 million people has the second highest percentage of smokers in the EU after Greece. More than half of Bulgarian men and about a third of Bulgarian women smoke.
Well i think it is the correct ruling bars should have the option to be smoking or non smoking this should have been done in the UK as pubs are closing at the rate of five a day since the ban putting people on the dole.
This Law was not thought through if a pub had a sign on its door stating this is a smoking pub if you are offended by smoke or smokers please do not enter.
The right of the individual, be it bar owner, or visitor to decide to smoke or not to smoke is paramount, you do not need a law as in the UK to decide for you...
That doesn't make sense. What about the right of the individual not to inhale smoke? That right doesn't exist in most Bulgarian bars and restaurants. I am an ex smoker myself, however have young children now and see things very differently. Will be visiting Pamporovo next week and my toddler son is recovering from a chest infection. While the mountain air may do wonders for him, we may have to sit in the apartment in the evenings to avoid making his condition worse. (Surely everyone knows ...

(Surely everyone knows how dangerous passive smoking is for children - don't they?)
