Been to boro the last three years and while we have loved it, we have seen large price increases and dwindling snow. I think it is a great place to learn, but having returned two weeks ago from valmienier 1800 in the french alps we wont be returning to bulgaria. The prices apart from alcohol were virtually the same if not cheaper. The snow was amazing, as were the amount of runs, lifts and even a snowpark. Weve had some of the best holidays in boro, but even better in the alps.
My personal experience in some respects can accomadtate all. I have skied a lot of resorts throughout Europe and can accept all that people say. I will stick my neck out and say that the only resort worth considering at the moment in BG is Bansko, there is investment on the mountain and forgiving the building site in the town (or around it) there is an atmosphere similar to the alps, you have to look but it is there. Relevent points from all.....
The lift pass is expensive by alpine standards but the lift system reflects the cost, the piste preperation is outstanding as is the running of cannons, i skied for twelve seasons in Tignes/Val`d'isere, not a week but more like twelve weeks per year, an incredible area, but lacking in something, skiing is a state of mind, more than just km of piste, i dealt with very serious skiers who were not happy, they complained about piste preperation, the weather, the lifts, in fact everything because they were paying a lot for the experience. In BG i see skiers who are happy, they may have only just descended the nursury slope, they have achieved more than they thought possible, their dreams extend to other achievments, the first blue and on to the first red, this is skiing, the achievment and the appreciation of the surroundings.....
It was always a pioneer sport, it has been bought to the masses and with that the complaints have come as well. Again a personal view, if no one comes to BG to ski and all the resorts close, the snow will still fall and i for one will still climb to ski what i feel is one of the last areas in Europe where the mountain spirit still exists. I accept not for long but at least it still exists........
thanks bikegirl and also thanks stevie d for apology.
I am sorry if my comments are negative and i'm not trying to condemn bulgaria and its resorts, just give my own opinion of my experience there. Having said that if we had gotten better snow conditons and the whole ski area had been open i'm sure i'd be more positive. But as we all know with snow, we cant control it unfortunately. I do have a regret of not goin to bansko, which could have also been possible, and from what i've since heard ...

We've been to Pamps for last 3 years - before this we'd never skiied at all. Because of my job, we have to go during Feb half term - and have never found anywhere that can match BG pricewise. And no - we don't have any investment out there.
I'm quite nervous still and Pamps suits me - I like that fact that I'm familiar with the main runs and the general outlay of the mountain. The snow in 2007 was awful - but it was the same all over Europe. This year it was fantastic.

We have seen prices increase, but again, go anywhere year after year and this is what you'd expect over time. This year there were definitely less people on the slopes - whether this was due to the lack of snow in 2007 ar the fact that half term was split over three weeks, I'm not sure.
We've already booked for next Feb - but we've also booked France for a week over New Year. Taking into account equipment hire and ski school, France has already cost us almost twice as much as Bulgaria, so it will be interesting to see if this is justified.
France over new year is the busiest/most expensive week of the entire season, that coupled with the previous xmas week.i'm not surprised france has cost you twice as much as bulgaria as at this time everything is more expensive, from ski pass, to ski hire to accomodation. After these two weeks prices decrease and that is when the best deals are, unfortunately not at new years week.there should be a great atmosphere though being new year so enjoy
