Next year school holls

Im a regular during the winter (hi pete an all!), just look in now and again during the summer so to say- However i was about to book a reasonable deal in January for me and the kids as usual to Borovets (its much cheaper than the school holls- dont want to open up that debate again!, but its about the only time we can afford to go)BUT a letter arrived from school saying in no uncertain terms- NO hollidays outside term breaks will be tollerated, they have scrapped the unofficial two weeks a ...
Im a regular during the winter (hi pete an all!), just look in now and again during the summer so to say- However i was about to book a reasonable deal in January for me and the kids as usual to Borovets (its much cheaper than the school holls- dont want to open up that debate again!, but its about the only time we can afford to go)BUT a letter arrived from school saying in no uncertain terms- NO hollidays outside term breaks will be tollerated, they have scrapped the unofficial two weeks a year allowed and any hollidays must be at the most expensive times (school holls)- had to tell the kids theres little chance of skiing next year to which they are bitterly dissapointed. Apart from learning a skill they have been doing since age 4 (now 12 and 10), they are being deprived of the cultural experience etc, something we have done for many years now. They are regular attenders at school, not missing many days etc because of illness but where once upon a timethey would g to school feeling a "little unwell" in order to keep their attendance up so it didnt affect their record for requesting hollidays outside of school hollidays, now its "well ill be off if im feling pooly next time if thats the case!".
Not sure who will end off worse- an agreed week off for an effort to attend in order to achieve it, or more sickness cos they have little to look forward too- shame i aint on a school teachers wage and can afford to go in half tearm.
Thoughts?

Just go anyway and call the school and tell them your kids are ill and won't be in all week. If you can go week before half term then if kids talk about it when they go back it will sound like they went in half term. Razz Shame to have to resort to these tactics for some affordable quality family time, but as as a one off what harm can it do,just not in exam time! Razz

Your kids decide if they feel well enough to go to school? I wish I had you for a parent... On the plus side, if its that important you've got 8 months to save the extra cash needed to go during the holidays, although the queues will be a nightmare. Or alternatively you could just tell them, 'look kids, credit crunch and all that - I can only afford to take one of you. Now fight!'

Mat-we have just got back from a half tearm sumer holl to Spain-(all be it more expensive but we do try 2 holls a year)
i object to paying that amount at half term when we could have two holls a year! (i know a lot will say be lucky to have one but you dont know our personal cicumstances and the absolute shite we have had over the last year!)
No my kids do not dictate when they are ill- but if your a parent and know kids there are times they will try to "spinn it" if posible- if they know ...

just wish it wasnt as expensive during the holls as dont want to miss out!

Ian

if you take the kids out of school what are they saying will happen? Also what is job eg if you are in the forces or a job that dictates when you can take time off can use this as an excuse. Are either of your kids looking at taking sport as a GCSE, skiing can be used as one of their chosen sports so why shouldnt you take them. Hope you get round it. Two hols a year isnt asking a lot. If I could get the time off work I would have six or more Razz

re: Next year school holls

Funny thing is sam- got a letter from school the week before, for their regular trip to Valloreal (thinks thats it!)for a weeks skiing (at a cost of over £700 for the week!) Now the school are taking those that can afford it out of school for a week (march 14th next year- not holls)- so i may argue that point, being sporting an all that, doing nothing different to what the school are advertising themselves!
Let you know how i get on!
Cheers

Sorry..rules are rules! If one is allowed to take their kids out of school during term time for whatever reason....why cant the parents who cant afford holidays allow their kids to play truant?
Life is tough....not just for you but also for the single parents who cant afford sking holidays for their kids. Just be thankful you can take them on holiday outside the Uk and pay the extra!! There is more to education than holidays in BG and be thankful that at least your kids have a holiday! not ...

The biggest culprits are the tour operators for bumping up the cost of holidays during the school holidays, i ask this question, how can they justify charging more when they are not supplying more, especially when the hotel food, aircraft fuel, aircrew and airport staff wages remain the same during half term as it is during the week before or after.
Yes they come out with their old and tired excuse, supply and demand. But a tin of beans in Asda costs the same in June as it does in august ...

I took my son skiing during school term on quite a number of occaisons and it didnt affect the grades he got, 12 a-c he got, he went to collage and is now to going to university.
I think the tour operators are justified when prices are higher when its during public holidays ie xmas, because firms usally have to pay double wages. Otherwise they are money grabbing.

re: Next year school holls

Well, people don't demand more beans in August than they do in June, so the price stays the same....
But I think they'd struggle to justify not allowing you to take your kids skiing in the same week as they are arranging a school holiday to do just the same thing. I presume this is because they don't want the competition, thereby ensuring that the school organised trip is full and the maximum number of teachers get a free ski holiday....paid.

re: Next year school holls

argue with the school that it is an educational trip.
many schools take kids abroad on trips such as skiing.u as a parent doing this is no different.
