I should stop reading these threads....We have saved hard for 2 years to treat our boys to a skiing holiday....going to Borovets as it was cheaper than Europe..however it is still costing us £3300.00 (It is half term). I feel excited and elated when I read the positive threads, but the negative ones make me panic. We have worked so hard for this holiday, that we will enjoy it whatever...we are all novices so a little snow will do us....no more scare mongering please
louise . do not worry . you and your family will have a great time .. i have just come back with my son .. he learnt to ski in boro when he was 8 .. he now nearly 21 . unfortunatly he now boards .... just kiddin son ....
You will love it! It is exactly what you make of it. I have skiied in France, Italy, Finland etc and the best holiday I had was in Borovets! If you get a really good, sociable ski group you will have a ball. People like to talk down Borovets and make themselves seem superior. You get out of a holiday what you put in. If you are willing to take a bit of rough with the smooth (no pun intended about the pistes) you will get on just fine. Half the fun of skiing is seeing somewhere new and ...

Borovets is certainly unusual and nothing like all the other Alpine resorts I have been to. Relax and take it all in.
I was in Borovets, last week and had a brill time. Ive skiied for 23 years now all over Europe (Borovets the last 6 years). I know its not the best resort in the world but a holiday is what you make of it. If you are a die hard skiier then you should be going to top resorts if you expect top quality. I go to Borovets because its fun. We had a great family holiday, snow wasnt as good as previous years but at the end of the day we were able to ski every day and the sun was out, so for me thats ...

Went to bulgaria snowbording last year (feb/march if i remember correctly) pretty much a month after going to val thorens and having perfect snow there.
With all mother natures sports (surfing, snowsports in particular) there is an element of risk involved, i have been on surf holidays where the surfs been flat for a week! and snowsports are no different.
we had it good! reall good!

My two pence worth.

it deumped pretty much every night and then blue skies in the day, the pistes on both mountains were courdorouy and very well pisted..no crowds, stashes of off pisting through trees e,t,c yasterbetz side, and some of the best boarding i have ever done!!!
The night boarding was fantastic! and good value, we would often get the first runs down the mountain on fresh pisted snow, and you barely needed to turn, just blast down the hill... only had a little bit of ice on the first day , and crowds only when the bulgarians came out to play on weekends!
It cost me £450 for a week half board, and that is my TOTAL expenditure!!! nothing else.
In contrast, i have just returned from three valleys in france and spent £900 for 4 days boarding. It was icy in places and the exchange rate vs euro means you were paying £5 for a red bull!!!
touts and sex clubs, yes they are a pain!!! but just be firm with them, and always check your change! dont go around flashing cash and being stupid and you should be o.k
However i do agree that the bulgarians need to be very carefull, especially in this economic downturn!! they have a fantastic oopportunity to capture the brits and other nations, who will refuse to pay euro prices now the exchange rate is so bad!
offer us a viable alternative and keep prices down and you will prosper!! if not then you will fade away ..

First he said
"This results in 'mogul' type skiing throughout the resort."
I questioned him on this because moguls everywhere is highly unlikely due to a few factors, more about this later. So in a subsequent post after I questioned him he changed his statement to:
"This was generally throughout the resort, including the yastrebets 1, which we ran."

Whereas before it was throughtout the resort, it's now only generally. So moguls are not everywhere as he orginally lead us believe, after I questioned the authencity of his report.
In his first post he stressed that SNOW is the overiding factor for a ski holiday so with 20 years of experience skiing in Canada and Europe he chooses of all places Borovets. Someone with his experience, 20 years, wouldn't choose Borovets if great snow conditions are essential. Not saying Borovets can't have great snow if it snows heavily but there are plenty of resorts in France, Austria which are far more snow sure, which he didn't go to despite stating how important snow is for his enjoyment.
As for there being moguls on Yastrebets 1 it's highly unlikely because :
A) All the runs around Yatrebetz 1 are red or black. Borovets as resort doesn't attract many hardcore/upper-intermediate skiers so the idea of there being enough skiiers on the run to create moguls is implausible.
B) The majority of beginners and lower-intermediates after exiting the gondola will head towards the green and blue run in the Markudjik area because one look at the piste map around Yastrebetz with only black and red pistes marked will deter most of them. So again the idea of there being enough skiiers on the run to create moguls is implausible.
C) Most ski resorts if not all, around europe are season to date experiencing lower visitor numbers than last year due to uncertainty caused by the 'credit crunch'. So again the idea of there being enough skiiers on the run to create moguls is implausible.
DontTrusttheCam, If you can describe the main features of Yatrebetz 1 I will believe you were genuinely there. Dewcribe featrures which can't be gleaned from the piste map.
My original statement was " 'mogul' type skiing throughout the resort". Had i said it was unpisted and very bumpy then maybe you would disagree with that. Same same in my eyes. I dont care.
Not sure what your motives are for continuing to dispute the 'mogul' issue or the things i originally posted. This is a forum for opinion. I gave my opinion from my own experience in Borovets. You cant change my opinion to suit yours, so stop trying. I dont much care ...
DaringRed - Are you a troll?

Why you feel the need to play childish games of 'he said this and hey everyone im right and he's wrong bla bla bla' Stop whining on and chill out.
If it makes you feel better just for you DaringRed
'hey everyone going to Borovets when i was there its a little bit uneven and very bumpy with lots of ice on those unpisted runs so be carefull with the not so experienced kids and the nervous wife'
DontTrustTheCam, I asked a simple question. And no I'm not trying to change your opinion to suit mine. I'm questioning the authenticity of what you wrote. If you skied Yatrasbetz 1 like you said you have, you should be able to comment on it's distinguishing features.
avalanche - Attitude or what! Chill out. I gave an opinion on my experience. Get over it. You cant change it!
The shower head holder fixed to the wall in room 102 fell off the wall due to no screws. Whats your problem?
What difference does it make to you if anyone with me was in ski school? Your point being? Dont tell me your part of the 'budget v alp snob' brigade? Grow up.
Ski school entry is actually for all levels and not just, as you imply, for beginners!

There were actually 7 of us. 3 in the Iglika in room 102 (without the balcony) and 4 in the Samokov. We didnt book or travel together. The 4 in the Samokov consisted of my adult son, adult daughter and her boyfriend and my daughters friend. All paid for by themselves and they booked Borovets weeks before travelling.
My decision to go to Borovets with my wife and younger son (14) was booked two days before we flew out on 24 Jan. Different flights, different hotels.
My choice of resort had nothing to do with budget or 'piste class' as you clearly imply. What is your problem?
dont assume that you know what other peoples situations are like just because your own may be that way!
Seems that the first responses to my original post were in agreement. I dont much care for likes of DaringRed who appears only to be interested in making everyone believe his version is the correct one, but having read your previous posts with Mark IOW etc the 'im on the piste' thread you surprise me at your post.
Tried it, done it, got the tee shirt, will go somewhere else next time. It may be France, it may be Canada, it may be Austria - dont know. It may even be Bansko because ive never been - get my point.
