I think I've been in the book shop you mentioned, I bought some maps from there for Smolyan area. I'll look out for the Art shop next time i'm there,
I was wondering about the road to Greece too? We were thinking of having a drive to see where it is. Where does it start from? I heard there were two crossings close to Smolyan.
I would just like to add to this post with the details of the nature trips and off road tours in the mountains.

Hi Missizippi

If you, or anyone, is interested in exciting adventures in the Rhodope mountains, where you get see places that you wouldn't normally see, then a trip with BalkanTraks is for you. Balkantraks is a nature safari specialist for wildlife photo shoots, nature watching and camping out in meadows and tag-along tours. They operate from just outside Smolyan and Terry knows the Rhodope mountains like the back of his hand. He is an excellent guide and the off-road trips up in the mountains are unbelievably spectacular. They also tailor trips to your likes and dislikes such as horse riding, sauna, spa and massages, trips to the Devil's Throat cave, off-road drives with spectacular views from mountain tops, picnics, and special trips for families and children. They do everything they can make your experience a memorable and interesting one.
Terry also runs an off-road course which although quite intensive tests your driving skills and once completed to his satisfaction and high standards you get rewarded with a certificate of merit which makes you feel that you have really accomplished something. As Carole has already said their website is www.balkantraks.com and Alison (his wife) puts together seriously good lunches and picnics and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
Also know a good place to stay just outside Pamporovo in a house in a village called Momchilovtsi www.fourseasonsretreat.co.uk with "almost" resident

Wow - thanks Andie, that sounds great.
We have an apartment in Pamporovo so, as well as looking for things for ourselves to do if and when we come out there and its not ski season, but also to promote the apartment in the summer months too. I would say that we have had more interest in letting it in the summer months than the winter months so ideas and links for my website are much appreciated.
Still also wondering about the road to Greece and a completion date? Are any of you 'locals' ...

Yes, I am going to be almost a full time resident at Nigel's house in Momchilovtsi from 18 May while I am waiting to have my house built so I could be there for some time lol. But, it is no hardship for me as the village is such a wonderful friendly, picturesque place and Nigel's house is so warm, welcoming and I just love being there sitting on the terrace loonking over the mountains.

I can recommend it to anyone who wants a holiday away from all the crowds and prices of Pamporovo and still be within easy driving distance of it and the surrounding areas. Especially in the winter months - you can so much fun at the Momchilovtsi Snowboard Park at good prices and without fear of being ploughed down - absolutely ideal for new skiers and family fun days out.
Okay, I am beginning to sound as tho I have an investment in Nigel's property but after all he did donate a week's holiday at 4SR as a prize in John Dixon's recent auction to raise money for the orphange. So I will get off my soap box now but needless to say I can't recommend 4SR enough.
Andie
PS. that Carole - she promised me she wouldn't say anything about the late night parties etc etc
