A SKI accident that left a mother dead and a German politician badly hurt on New Year's Day has sparked a debate over safety on the slopes – as well as demand for ski helmets.
The Slovak woman collided on an Austrian slope with Dieter Althaus, governor of the German state of Thuringia. He had a helmet; she did not.

Hi Robertk ... someone is going to mix us up!

When I was teaching I wouldn't take anyone out onto a slope without a helmet if they were under 14 and although it was voluntary after that age I would be very reluctant to take them out.

Personally, I started wearing them after I had a severe blow to the head during a run over on the avalanche side of the top runs at Borovets ... I was lucky, there was no lasting damage penguin ... but if I'd got hurt up there I'd have been pretty much ...

I believe that every skier and boarder should wear helmets.

re: Ski helmet or not?

I've just bought a new one. Due to the size of my head, it looks like i am wearing Pluto but whilst it may not look the best, it is best to be safe than sorry.

Thanks to everyone for the advice......helmets it is then!
Of course it's better to be safe than sorry, going to shop around now and see what I can get......don't want anything spoiling our first time or it may put us off for good!

Cheers
Robert

PS. Changing my name to Boab1 now as it could get confusing with Robert TK

Try Lidl or TKMaxx first ... it's something that you should ideally replace every year or so (or after a bad bump) so you don't want to spend a fortune on it

re: Ski helmet or not?

Definately get one...skiing in Bansko currently and so many more are wearing them so will not look out of place if that is what the underlying issue is.

If you value your life...wear one! Very Happy

re: Ski helmet or not?

Deffo get one - Im a convert now after wearing one a few weeks ago (to set a good example to our daughters) and I suffered an almighty bump on the head off a chairlift. If it had hit bare flesh or a fabric hat it would have taken a nasty chunk out of my skull! Instead Ive got a nice battle weary helmet to show people instead of stitches Very Happy

BTW - it was a cheapy from Lidl - despite the price it worked very nicely Very Happy

re: Ski helmet or not?

Samokov ski school in Borovets insist on kids wearing them (provided) and my son had a nasty wipeout last time- helmet saved him i feel- its not allway what you do yourself- you cant controll others who are out of controll smashing into you!
