re: Brilliant - Borovets

as I said ..my point was about the icy pavements which is so easy to fix and so silly to leave icy, and gritting the roads isnt a huge exercise in common sense but obviously with a lack of infrastructure no-one seems to be bothered or pay for it ,a small thing for many people granted ,but it could ruin things for someone who has saved up for a holiday .Someone asked about specific health and safety issues and that was my small reply..OK??
crikey..

Don't read newspapers in UK, due to misleading articles and hyped up / sensationalism so don't read any newspaper report as gospel.

Any avalanche warnings are assessed actually in the resort not by some reporter in Sofia. Usually in the bowl on top of Rila.

We have always been warned not to go off piste on those occasions and have never heard of anyone being caught.

Scapula - the pathways are terrible in Borovets - someone actually died a couple of years ago due to a fall so you do have my sympathy - I think it is down to the people who rent bars etc in Borovets not taking much interest in how people get through the door to their premises. You have a valid point - what I object to is the people who slate the resort off wholesale.....I always tell people to make sure they wear really good footwear when walking around......

I agree entirely...a risk in any resort. But risks are usually made explicit. Not in Borovets while we were there. I would just like to point out that I have some very fond memories of my holidays in Bulgaria and I'm only expressing my opinion regarding what I feel is a disregard for health and safety.

Thanks for your reasoned reply Fi2 ..I can only assume that lizas reply of "what ever" means she has no opinion It is a pity though that no central authority seems to take responsibility for the condition of the town but hopefully this will emerge in time before things get worse there as the potential of this place may suffer cheers

I have boarded in Bulgaria and the Alps (usualy 5 times a year) and have always encountered ice no matter what resort I was in. I have boarded in Bulgaria and the Alps (usualy 5 times a year) and have always encountered ice no matter what resort I was in. I appreciate that there is always more that can be done but hey we are going to a resort to endulge in a dangerous sport and are likley to have to walk on icy and slippery paths and roads. We have to take a certain amount of responsibility to protect ourselves when we know we are going to be in a different environment. I watch hundreds of people struggle down the roads (usually in ski boots) slipping and falling and on this forum moaning about the situation. Me and my family (the wife in ski boots) walk down the ice with no problems what so ever. Why? Because we appreciate the dangers and do something about it. We purchased what looks like a spiders web of rubber with spikes in the bottom that fit over your ski boots or shoes. They cost about £15. I can not understand why people struggle walking on ice when there is such an easy solution. However, these are probably the same people who complain when the runs are icy and still go out without a helmet and then complain when they whack themselves. Even more frightening is when they allow their children to go out without helmets. I saw a famliy this year who child was in an accident and the first thing that hit the ground was her head. They went completly mad at the person who had hit her but they had alowed her to go on icy slopes without wearing a helmet. If she had she would of got up and skied away.
In summary, take some of the responsibilty to protect yourselves and more importantly your children!!

Fi2, I tend to agree with alot of what you have said, however, this - 'but the resort itself is far better than alot in Europe' - is just plain wrong, I'm really not sure how you can justify that one. Assume that you are talking from a skiing point of view?
