re: Brilliant - Borovets

I have to say that I agree with Fi2, if the snow had been falling, I don't think there would be so many people moaning.

When I was skiing in Andorra 5 years ago we had avalanche wanrnings and they closed the slopes for the afternoon.
I went skiing in Austria 20 years ago and the ice was terrible due to lack of snow and similar conditions to this year in Borovets.
I went on a school skiing trip to France 25 years ago and one of the teachers on the trip broke her arm because she fell down ...

What I am trying to say is that these sorts of things and conditions can happen anywhere and have been for
years.

No sorry ! I went with an open mind and after reading some of the people comments on Boro. They seem to love it how ever bad it is ! and seem to have there little rosie tinted boro sun glasses on.
I have said I would come back if and when thing imoprove?
but I don't think they will, there seems to be a lot of boro lovers who don't like to see there little holiday spot commented on! and while they are prepared to keep going and not complain, things will not change and your little holiday ...

I'd have to agree with pete. I too went to Borovets this year having read a lot of bad comments about the place. I too went with an open mind as i am a firm believer that your holiday is what you make of it (read some of my earlier posts from before i went). Wanted to make up my own mnd

Unfortunately, i don't think i will ever return to Bulgaria. Yes it is a little cheaper than other resorts in europe and further afield, but i came away thinking that the people running the show in boro just aren't switched on enough.

I understand that snow conditions can be bad anywhere, at any time of the year, but, the frustrating thing last week was that: there was some good snow to be found but was inaccessible for approximately half of the week i was there due to poor lift systems! not good enough.

Ski school organisation was very poor. My girlfreind came back a worse skier. put in too andvanced a group. couldn't keep up, knocked her confidence. even left to find her own way down the mountain on friday when the gondola closed again. not good enough

Ski depot also poor. girlfriend given wrong sized boots twice. at the thrid time of asking, she was told that there were no more boots for her to try. ended up buying. She was also given skis which were far too long for her. got these changed at the second time of asking. Not good enough

Two nights when it was plenty cold enough for snow cannons, the six snow cannons stacked at the bottom of the rila slopes hadden't moved. not good enough

prices up the mountain vary wildly. borosport instructors tend to favour the more expensive ones. not too impressed when you tell them you want to go elswhere. There are two borosport instructors who actively seek out better/cheaper places to eat despite in fear of being seen by other borosport staff.

Nick

I read all the blogs before coming, The Holiday companys say great for beginners.
I had an open mind fancied a cheaper Holiday, but this time I got what I paid for and even less !

Anyone reading this from a Holiday Company , take note not a good place for beginners. If your lucky you get a good instructor! But if not you get one who could'nt careless and very sexist to boot!

Hi All,
We got back at the weekend from our 1st visit to Boro and also our 1st time skiing. I'm not sure but it seems everyone complaining about instructors used Borosport.
We used the Samakov school and had the nicest instructor. Very helpful, friendly and took us to the cheaper places to eat at lunch. Even organised a night out for all of us. Yes it was at a friends bar but the prices were very cheap and we were given lots of free shots and wine.

I do agree their health & safety leaves alot to be desired!
I would go back, the positives by far outweigh the negatives in our opinion.

I haven't got rose tinted specs on about Borovets, I just happen to like it and can see past the things that people are complaining about.
Everyone has the right to their opinion, so if I want to stick up for it, then I have the right too, just as the people who are complaining about it have the right too.

I'm not saying that it is perfect. I had to change my boots 3 times last year before I got the right ones. So this year I finally decided to get my own!

I agree that the aki depot people could smile a bit more, but it didn't bother me because whenever I get on a bus in Brighton, where I live, I get the same reaction from every bus driver!

I do understand about the ski school too, but I had a terrible instructor in France.
This year I had the best, most patient, and kind ski instructor I have ever had.

re: Brilliant - Borovets

We had a girl in our group that worked for a holiday company, she had to write a report on the holiday
and facilities, as well as the treatment she got from
the reps out there. not sure that Niel$%^ will be getting good comments. The first hotel was a dive, but they did eventually get moved and then
they booked for ski-doo and nobody turned up, then they couldn't get the money back. we had no problems at all,
but there is good and bad everywhere....

And how do you defend the poor lift system and the failure to use snow cannons when they easily could have done?

Staff at ski depot not always bad though. very, very, very helpful on last day when the 'tips here please' tray was out.

I think you would be wise to have another look at those specs! c'mon, i have skied elswhere in europe and have never been treated by people who are so niave that they think the little things don't matter. For a country that has a poor economy with one of ...

For a country that has a poor economy with one of its main sources of income as tourism, bulgaria has a lot to learn. and fast if it wants to maintain its appeal.

Mr Terry

will said some people are looking this resort through rose tinted glasses.
Your right the lift system is dated and they shut it without any concerns to the paying customers.
My concerns was also the safety of one of the pistes it was the black which comes down to the middle station of the gondola within the middle of the piste just before the station was sitting out a large lump of metal this was there for at least two days and not attempt to make safe.

A fellow skier came down and his skis got caught needless to say he went flying lucky not to do any serious damage.
Say what response we get on that issue!!
